The three zones that matter on an industrial site

Industrial risk is geographic. It concentrates at the boundary, the gate and the point where material changes hands.

The perimeter, after hours

A long compound wall cannot be patrolled continuously and does not need to be. A boundary rule on the cameras already facing the fence turns the whole length into something that reports a crossing in seconds, with a snapshot, during the hours you specify.

The gate

Everything of value enters and leaves through it, and in most plants the record of that is a notebook. Vehicle and plate logging turns gate movement into a searchable record, and shift-change attendance stops the queue at the biometric machine.

Dispatch and loading

The highest-value, lowest-watched area on most sites. Loading activity outside scheduled hours, or a vehicle at a bay when no dispatch is booked, is a rule worth having.

The yard in between

Scrap piles, finished-goods staging and parked trailers are where things sit unattended longest. Loitering rules catch the pattern that matters: someone present in a zone far longer than a legitimate task requires.

What industrial conditions do to cameras

The environment is the part that separates an industrial specification from a commercial one, and it is where most cheap installs fall over.

Dust and airborne particulates

A dome in a grinding or textile environment fogs its own bubble within months. Housings and cleaning intervals are a specification decision, not an afterthought — and a fogged camera is invisible to everyone until something is watching image quality.

Monsoon and cable runs

Water finds the junction box that was left unsealed in March. Most 'the camera stopped working' calls in July trace back to cabling shortcuts taken during installation.

Distance and lighting at the boundary

Perimeter cameras are asked to cover long, dark stretches. What matters is enough pixels on a human figure at the far end of the run to classify it as a person — which is a placement and lens question, settled by survey rather than by brochure.

Vibration and knocks

Forklifts, shutters and trolleys move cameras out of alignment. A camera pointed at the sky is a blind spot that looks exactly like a working camera on the recorder.

Running it across shifts, and across plants

Industrial sites run around the clock, so 'after hours' means different things on different days, and a rule that fires during general shift on a Tuesday is noise. Detection schedules follow the shift pattern rather than the clock. Where a company runs more than one plant, the sensible structure is one view across all of them with alerts routed to the person responsible for that site — not four separate recorders and four separate apps that only the IT team can log into.

Deployment without stopping production

Nothing about adding analytics requires the line to stop. An edge device at the site consumes the streams the existing recorder already receives, so there is no rewiring and no camera replacement as a precondition. A survey that walks the perimeter produces a very different answer from one that multiplies square footage, and the difference is usually fewer cameras placed where losses actually occur.

Will this work with the cameras and DVR we already have?
