Straight answer: monsoon rarely breaks the camera itself — it breaks the joints around it. Water gets in through a loose cable gland or an open junction box, domes fog up from trapped humid air, unearthed connectors corrode, and storms take out power exactly when you need the system most. A one-hour check of every seal, joint and earthing point before the season starts prevents almost all of it.

Every June and July, we get the same call. A camera has gone dark, or the footage from the one night that mattered is a fogged white blur. The owner assumes the camera failed. Usually it didn't — something around it did, months earlier, and monsoon just finished the job.

Why do CCTV cameras fail specifically in monsoon?

Outdoor cameras sold in India are built to handle rain hitting the housing. What they can't handle is water that gets inside through a gap nobody closed properly. Four things account for almost every monsoon breakdown:

Loose cable glands and open junction boxes. Installers routing cable through a wall often leave the gland finger-tight, or skip sealing a junction box because "it's under the eave, it won't get wet." Wind-driven rain reaches places that don't look exposed.

Fogged domes. A dome housing traps a small pocket of air. If the seal is even slightly damaged, humid outside air keeps replacing it, and every temperature drop during rain condenses moisture on the inside of the glass — the image goes white exactly when you need it clearest.

Corroded connectors. BNC and power connectors left exposed, or wrapped in tape instead of proper heat-shrink, corrode over a season of humidity. The picture degrades gradually, which is why it's often blamed on the camera aging rather than the joint failing.

Power surges and outages. Lightning-adjacent surges and grid fluctuations are more frequent in monsoon than any other season. A recorder that browns out or reboots mid-storm can lose exactly the footage from the incident that made you check.

What should you actually check before the season starts?

A pre-monsoon walk-around takes under an hour for a typical shop or small factory, and it beats every one of the failures above:

  1. Open every accessible junction box and check the seal is intact, not just present. A gasket that looks fine but has hardened and cracked with age offers no real protection.
  2. Inspect dome housings for internal moisture right now, in dry weather — if you see any fogging before the rain has even started, that unit will fail the first heavy downpour.
  3. Check earthing at the camera pole or bracket and at the recorder. Poor earthing is what turns a surge into permanent board damage instead of a harmless trip.
  4. Look at cable routing for low points where water can pool and sit against a joint for days. Cable should always run so water drains away from connectors, not toward them.
  5. Test your power backup under real load — camera count, switch, and recorder together, not the recorder alone — for as long as outages in your area typically last.

Is this a one-time fix or does it repeat every year?

It repeats. Seals degrade with UV and heat over a year, so a joint that held last monsoon isn't guaranteed to hold this one. Sites that treat this as an annual ten-minute-per-camera task rarely have a monsoon failure. Sites that install once and never revisit the physical hardware are the ones calling us in July.

Where this doesn't help

None of this fixes a camera that was undersized or wrongly rated for outdoor use to begin with — an indoor-rated camera mounted outside will eventually fail regardless of how well the joints are sealed, and no amount of resealing substitutes for the right hardware in the first place.
