Straight answer: night shift attendance fails not because the technology is different after dark, but because the supervision is gone. Any control that depends on a person noticing something has no one to do the noticing between 10pm and 6am — so the control has to be automatic, and it has to cover exits as well as entries.
Every site we work with has a night shift story. Usually it surfaces the same way: production output does not match the headcount that was supposedly on the floor.
The four things that go wrong after dark
Nobody is checking the check-in. During the day, a supervisor at the gate is an informal audit. At night that audit does not exist, so whatever the system records goes unchallenged.
Mid-shift departure is invisible. A single entry event at 10pm proves someone arrived. It proves nothing about 1am. If exits are not recorded, an eight-hour shift and a twenty-minute appearance produce identical records.
Side gates are unwatched. The gate with a guard during the day is often the only instrumented one. At night the alternatives are both unsupervised and unrecorded.
Manual entries spike. Failed scans at night get resolved by the supervisor the next morning, from someone else's account of what happened. This is the largest single source of night-shift attendance error we see.
The four controls that fix it
1. Instrument every exit, not just the main entry. This is the highest-value change and the one most often skipped. Pairing entry and exit events is what turns "was present" into "was present for eight hours."
2. Make the record self-evidencing. An attendance entry that stores the camera frame it came from cannot be quietly reconstructed the next morning. It removes the ambiguity that night shift otherwise runs on.
3. Alert on gate movement during shift hours. Not just intrusion after hours — movement at the gate during the shift, when nobody should be leaving. That is the signal supervision used to provide.
4. Review the night-shift manual-entry rate separately. Aggregate numbers hide it. If manual entries are 2% by day and 20% by night, you have found your problem and it is not a technology problem.
Why cameras suit night shift specifically
Two reasons beyond the obvious.
They work without a human present, which is the entire point. And because coverage is a software question rather than a per-door hardware purchase, instrumenting the four exits a site actually has stops being a budget conversation. That is the practical blocker on most sites: exits go uncovered because each one meant buying another reader.
Low light is the fair objection. Most entrances already have adequate lighting for recognition because they were lit for safety; those that are not usually need a lamp rather than a new camera. The feasibility check answers that per gate rather than in the abstract — and we would rather tell you a gate needs a light than sell you a system that quietly misses people at 2am.

Compare average recorded shift duration for night shift against day shift, over one month.
If night is materially shorter, you are either losing hours or failing to record exits. Both are worth knowing before the next payroll run.
