A 3 shift attendance system needs three things a single-shift system doesn't: a rule for attributing hours when a shift crosses midnight, an exit event for every entry so hours can actually be computed, and a handover window that's treated as normal rather than flagged as an error. Miss any one of these and the day shift's attendance will look fine while the night shift's payroll quietly disputes itself every month.

If you run one shift, attendance is mostly a solved problem — people arrive, people leave, the clock does the rest. Run three shifts back to back, 24 hours a day, and the same clock starts working against you. The trouble almost never shows up on the day shift. It shows up at the two seams: midnight, and handover.

Why does midnight attribution cause disputes?

A night shift that runs 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. crosses a date boundary in the middle of the working period. Most attendance software timestamps each punch with the calendar date it actually happened on, which means the same continuous shift gets split — a few hours land on one date, the rest land on the next.

On a report, that shift now looks like two short, unrelated attendance events instead of one eight-hour shift. Payroll calculates overtime and weekly-off rates per calendar day by default, so a shift that should read as one clean eight-hour entry can come out as two fragments that don't add up to anything sensible. The fix isn't complicated — the shift needs to be attributed as a single unit to whichever date it started on — but it has to be configured deliberately. Left on default settings, most systems get this wrong.

Why do you need exit events, not just entries?

An entry-only system answers one question: who showed up. In a factory that runs one shift a day, that's often enough — everyone leaves roughly together and the day ends.

In continuous operations it isn't enough, because the next shift is arriving while the last one is supposed to be leaving. Without a recorded exit, you can't distinguish three very different situations: a worker who left on time, a worker who's still on the floor two hours after their shift ended, and a worker who never actually showed up for the shift the system thinks they worked. All three look identical on an entries-only log. Recording the exit is what turns a list of arrivals into actual hours worked — which is the number payroll and labour compliance both need.

What does shift handover overlap look like, and how do you fix it?

Most 24x7 sites deliberately overlap shifts by ten or fifteen minutes so the outgoing operator can brief the incoming one — a machine running, a batch mid-process, a safety issue to flag. During that window, both people are legitimately on site and legitimately logged at the gate.

If your system treats any overlap as a duplicate punch or a data error, it will generate a stream of false alerts every single day, at every shift change, forever. The fix is to define the overlap as a named window in the shift configuration, not leave it to the anomaly detector to guess. Once it's a rule instead of an exception, the noise disappears and the alerts that remain are the ones actually worth looking at — like someone still on site an hour after the overlap window closed.

Where does face recognition help, and where does it fall short?

It isn't a free pass on the night shift specifically. Recognition accuracy depends heavily on lighting, and a camera tuned for daylight can miss faces badly under gate floodlights or IR illumination at 2 a.m. If your night shift matters as much as your day shift — and in a 24x7 operation it does — the gate needs to be set up and tested for night conditions on its own, not assumed to work because it works at noon.
