Straight answer: in most cases, yes. AI video analytics reads the stream your DVR or NVR already produces — so the camera does not need to be "AI-ready", a particular brand, or new. What actually decides whether a camera is usable is where it points, what the light is like, and how many pixels land on the thing you care about. Almost every site we assess can reuse most of its estate; the exceptions are face recognition and number plates, which are fussy about camera position.

This is the single most common question we get, and it is usually asked defensively — because the first quote the person received proposed replacing every camera on the property.

That quote is the expensive part. The intelligence is software. Cameras are just the eyes, and you probably already bought them.

How does AI run on cameras that aren't AI cameras?

Your cameras already do the hard physical work: they sit in the right places, they have power and cable, and they produce video. That video goes to a DVR or NVR, which almost always can hand it out as a stream — usually over a protocol called RTSP, sometimes discovered through a standard called ONVIF.

Anything that can read that stream can analyse it. The detection models don't run inside your camera; they run on a small computer on your site that subscribes to those streams and watches them continuously.

So the question "is my camera AI-compatible?" is really two much duller questions:

  • Can something read a stream from it?
  • Is the picture good enough, at the spot that matters, for the specific thing you want detected?

The first is nearly always yes. The second is where the honest work is.

Which of my cameras will actually work?

This is where vendors get vague, so here is the blunt version. Different capabilities have wildly different demands on the picture.

Read that table again and notice the shape of it. The capabilities most people buy AI for — knowing someone is in the yard at 2am, knowing a camera just went dark — run fine on the cameras you already own. The two that are fussy are the two that need to read something small and specific: a face, a plate.

That is a much cheaper conversation than "replace all sixteen".

The thing that actually decides it: pixels on target

A camera mounted high on a corner, covering a whole yard, is excellent for "is there a person out there" and useless for "who is that person". Same camera, same resolution — different job.

What matters is not the megapixels on the box, it is how many of those pixels land on the subject at the distance they will actually be. An 8MP camera looking down at a 30-metre yard puts fewer pixels on a face than a 2MP camera at head height beside a door.

What about "AI-ready" cameras — is that a real thing?

Partly. Some cameras run detection on the camera itself. That is genuinely useful, and it is also a commitment: you get the capabilities that manufacturer shipped, on the cameras you bought from them, and you upgrade by buying hardware again.

When analytics run on a device on your site instead, the camera goes back to being a camera. Mixed brands are fine. Old and new together are fine. HD-over-coax cameras feeding an ageing DVR are usually fine. And when detection improves, the software updates — you don't re-cable a building.

Neither approach is dishonest. But "you need AI cameras" stated as a flat fact, by someone who sells cameras, is worth a follow-up question.

What genuinely justifies a new camera?

Three situations, in our experience:

A blind spot that matters. No software invents footage of an area nothing is pointed at. If the loading bay isn't covered, it isn't covered.

Face recognition at an entry point. Consent-based, enrolled-only attendance and known-face matching need a camera positioned for faces — near head height, at a doorway or gate, with light on the face rather than behind it. Frequently this is one repositioned camera, not a new one.

Number plates. Plate reading is genuinely demanding — the plate is small, often moving, often lit by headlights. A dedicated camera at the right height and angle is usually the honest answer.

Outside those three, be sceptical. Ask the direct question: which of my existing cameras will you reuse, and for each one you won't, why not? A vendor who has actually looked at your site can answer camera by camera. One who hasn't will answer in general terms about quality and future-proofing.

What does the on-site device do?

It subscribes to your camera streams, runs the detection models, and sends out events — someone crossed the boundary, a face matched an enrolled person, a camera stopped producing frames.

Because that processing happens on your premises, the video does not have to leave the building to be understood. That matters for cost, for privacy, and for what happens when your internet drops — which we go into in does AI CCTV work without internet.

So how do I check my own site before anyone visits?

Four questions you can answer yourself today:

  1. Can you view your cameras remotely on a phone app? If yes, your DVR is on the network and producing streams. That is most of the battle.
  2. Walk the site at the hour that worries you — usually night. Look at the actual footage then, not in daylight. Lighting decides more than specification.
  3. For each camera, write down what you would want it to notice. Not "security" — a specific event. This is the list that determines what you actually need.
  4. Stand where an intruder would enter. Is anything pointed at you? At what height?

That list is worth more than any spec sheet, and it is the same list we build during an assessment.

The short version

You almost certainly do not need a new camera estate. You need someone to tell you honestly which of your cameras can do which job, and to be specific about the two or three positions that genuinely need attention.
