Straight answer: IP cameras win for high resolution, long cable runs, and sites that will keep growing. Analogue cameras win for a small, fixed site on a budget, or anywhere your existing coaxial cabling is still good and rewiring would cost more than the cameras themselves. Neither is universally "better" — the honest comparison depends on your cabling, your camera count, and how much your site will grow.

Every quote we've seen in Punjab pushes IP as the upgrade, the way a shop pushes the bigger television. Sometimes that's the right call. Often it's the easier sale, not the better fit.

What's actually different between IP and analogue?

An IP camera does the video processing inside the camera and sends a digital signal over a network cable, usually CAT6, which also carries the camera's power (Power over Ethernet). An analogue camera sends a raw video signal down a coaxial cable to a DVR sitting in a cabin or office, and the DVR does the processing centrally, with power run separately. That's the whole distinction — everything else people argue about follows from it.

Which one actually costs less?

Camera for camera, analogue hardware is usually cheaper, and coaxial cable is far more forgiving of a rough termination than CAT6 carrying PoE, which matters if your installer isn't especially careful. But on a new site being wired from scratch, IP can come out cheaper overall, because one network cable carries both video and power — on analogue you're running two cables to every camera, which roughly doubles the labour and material for cabling. On a small site, or one where you're reusing existing coaxial runs, analogue usually wins on total cost. On a large new build, IP often does.

Does IP always mean better picture quality?

Generally yes, and this is IP's strongest real advantage. IP cameras commonly run at higher resolution than typical analogue setups, which matters directly for identifying a face or a number plate rather than just noticing that someone was present. Can an old analogue system still run AI detection?

Yes, more often than people assume. Analytics software reads a video stream — it doesn't care whether that stream started as analogue or IP, only that it can get access to it. If your DVR can output an RTSP stream, or a small IP encoder is added at the DVR, AI detection can run on cameras that were installed years before "AI CCTV" existed. When does upgrading from analogue to IP actually make sense?

Three honest reasons, and not many others. First, you need resolution your current cameras genuinely can't deliver — for face recognition at a gate, for instance. Second, you're adding far more cameras than your existing cabling and DVR channels can support, and you'd be running new cable either way. Third, you're wiring a brand-new site and there's no legacy cabling to preserve. Outside those three, replacing a working analogue system mainly buys you a newer label on the box, not a meaningfully better outcome.

What's the honest limitation on each side?

IP cameras are less forgiving of cabling mistakes — a badly terminated CAT6 run causes intermittent dropouts that are harder to diagnose than a fuzzy analogue picture, and PoE switches need their power budget calculated properly (see our piece on cabling corners installers cut). Analogue caps out on resolution and channel count in ways that eventually become a real ceiling if a site keeps growing. Neither system fixes bad camera placement or a badly maintained DVR — that problem exists on both sides equally.

The honest answer to "IP or analogue" is: match it to your cabling, your camera count today, and how many more cameras you expect to add in the next few years, not to which one sounds newer.
