Straight answer: a DVR records analogue cameras connected by coaxial cable; an NVR records IP cameras connected by network cable. You can tell which one you have by looking at the cable running to your cameras — round coax means DVR, square network cable means NVR. The difference matters mainly when you want to add AI analytics, because that needs a live network stream out of the box, and not every DVR gives you one.

Ask most shop or factory owners which recorder sits in their office, and you get a shrug. Nobody remembers what the installer fitted five years ago, and honestly, there was no reason to. The two boxes look almost identical, do the same basic job, and sit quietly until something breaks — or until someone wants to add intelligence to the system.

How can you tell which one you have?

Skip the spec sheet and look at the cable.

Coaxial cable (round, with a screw-on or push-fit connector, usually alongside a separate thin power cable) means an analogue camera feeding a DVR.

A single network (Ethernet) cable running to each camera — the same type used for office internet — means an IP camera feeding an NVR. Many IP cameras take power over that same cable (PoE), so there is often no second wire at all.

If the cabling is buried in conduit and you cannot see it, check the back of the recorder. A row of yellow or white RCA-style sockets is a DVR. A block of RJ45 network ports (or a single network port plus an internal switch) is an NVR.

What is actually different between the two?

A DVR receives an analogue video signal and does the work of converting it into a digital file inside the box. An NVR receives a signal that is already digital — the camera itself does the encoding — and the recorder mainly stores and serves it.

In practice this shows up as three things: IP cameras and NVRs generally support higher resolutions, IP camera cabling is standard network cable that any IT contractor can run, and IP systems are usually easier to expand because adding a camera is closer to adding a network device than rewiring a coaxial run.

None of this means analogue is obsolete. Modern coax standards push respectable resolution over the same old cabling, and for many small shops the existing analogue system is genuinely fine for its job — deterrence and basic evidence.

Does it matter for adding AI analytics later?

This is where the distinction stops being trivia and starts costing or saving you money.

AI analytics — face recognition, intrusion detection, loitering alerts — needs a live video stream it can process, typically over the same network protocol regardless of whether the camera behind it is analogue or IP. The question is whether your recorder can hand out that stream.

Most NVRs can, because streaming is what they were built to do. Many DVRs from the last five or six years can too, through a setting called RTSP output, though it is sometimes buried in a menu the original installer never touched. Older DVRs, or ones locked down by the manufacturer's app, sometimes cannot — and no software update fixes that.

What if your DVR cannot output a stream?

You have two realistic paths. Replace the whole recorder and camera estate — expensive, and often more than the problem calls for. Or add a small number of IP cameras and a separate NVR just at the positions where analytics genuinely matters — the main gate, the cash counter, the loading bay — while leaving the rest of the analogue system doing what it already does well.

The second path is cheaper and faster in almost every case we have looked at. It is not free of trade-offs: you now have two recorders to manage, which is one more thing to keep track of, and it only works if the positions that matter can be served by a handful of new cameras rather than the whole perimeter.

The two-minute check to do today

Walk to your recorder, look at the cable type, and open the network or RTSP settings menu to see if a stream URL is listed. That single check tells you more about your upgrade options than any brochure will.
