Straight answer: rotating shifts do not break attendance hardware — they break the rules layer above it. The most common failure is a night shift crossing midnight being split across two calendar dates, which manufactures a phantom absence and a phantom short day, every night, for every worker on nights.

The five rules that must be encoded
1. Shift date, not calendar date. A 22:00–06:00 shift belongs to the date it started. Get this wrong and every night-shift worker shows a half day on one date and an absence on the next. It is the single most common shift-attendance bug we find, and it is invisible in aggregate until someone checks an individual.
2. Roster before judgement. "Late" is meaningless without knowing which shift the person was on. The system needs the roster as an input, not as an afterthought — including rotation patterns and swap handling.
3. Grace measured from rostered start. Not from a fixed 9:00. For rotating staff a fixed reference marks half the workforce late on principle.
4. Overtime from shift end. Same logic. Overtime beginning after eight hours from that person's rostered start is different from overtime beginning at 18:00, and for rotating shifts those diverge daily.
5. Weekly-off and holiday rates on the actual roster day. A worker whose weekly off falls on Wednesday should be paid the off-day rate for Wednesday, not for Sunday.
The swap problem
Real workforces swap shifts informally. Ram covers Shyam's night, Shyam covers Ram's morning next week.
If the system has no swap mechanism, both appear absent from their rostered shift and present at unrostered times — and a supervisor fixes it by hand every month. A swap should be a two-tap request with an approver, recorded once and reflected everywhere downstream. This is a workflow feature, not a biometric feature, and it is where the actual admin time goes.
Why the sensor barely matters here
Everything above is true whether attendance comes from a fingerprint reader, a card, or a camera. The device supplies a timestamp; the rules layer decides what it means.
That said, one property of camera-based records helps specifically with shift work: because coverage is not limited to one door, entry and exit at different gates both get captured — which matters when a night crew enters through the main gate and leaves through the yard. Pairing those correctly is what makes shift duration real rather than assumed.
The audit worth running
Take one night-shift worker and one rotating worker. Recompute their last month by hand from raw punches, applying your stated rules.
If your hand calculation matches the system, the rules are encoded correctly. If it does not, you have found where every month's corrections come from — and it will be one of the five above.
