Straight answer: face recognition handles turbans, caps and hijabs without any issue, because they don't cover the face. Standard safety helmets are also fine. Surgical masks, full visors and sunglasses are the real problem, because they hide the eyes, nose or mouth — the exact landmarks the system measures. The honest fix for those is a brief mask-off moment at the gate, not a better algorithm.
This question comes up on almost every site visit in Punjab, and for good reason — turbans, helmets and masks are all normal parts of the working day here, not edge cases. Most vendors either dodge the question or claim their system "handles everything." Neither answer is useful. The honest answer is different for each covering, so here it is, one at a time.
Does face recognition work for employees wearing turbans?
Yes, in almost all cases. A turban covers the hair and scalp, not the facial landmarks — eyes, nose, mouth, jawline — that face recognition actually measures. It works the same way it would for anyone wearing a cap or a hijab, because the covering sits outside the region the algorithm reads. We have never seen turban-wearing staff as a genuine accuracy problem at a gate camera, provided the rest of the setup (lighting, angle, resolution) is sound — which matters more here than for anyone else, since it applies equally.
What about safety helmets on a factory floor?
Yes, as long as the helmet does not have a visor or chin strap covering the lower face. A standard hard hat — the kind worn on almost every factory and construction site — leaves the whole face exposed and does not affect recognition at all. Full-face welding helmets or riot-style visors are a different matter and typically need to be lifted at the gate for a moment, the same way they'd need to come off for a fingerprint scan or a supervisor's visual check.
Can face recognition identify someone wearing a mask?
This is the one covering that genuinely defeats most systems, and any vendor telling you otherwise is not being straight with you. A mask hides the nose, mouth and jawline, which are core landmarks for measurement, and accuracy drops sharply — some engines fall back to eye-region-only matching with meaningfully weaker confidence, others simply fail the match. Sites with routine mask use — pharma, food processing, welding shops — need either a mask-off moment at the gate or a fallback credential for those specific roles. There is no honest way around this one.
Do sunglasses or scarves stop face recognition from working?
Sunglasses hide the eyes, which are among the most important landmarks, and usually cause a failed match — this is true of almost every face recognition system on the market, not a PGAK-specific limitation. A scarf worn loosely around the neck, common in winter, has no effect at all. Pulled up over the nose and mouth, though, it behaves the same as a mask. The rule that covers all of these is simple: whatever covers the eyes, nose or mouth is the problem; whatever covers the hair, ears or neck is not.
What should you do when a covering can't be recognised?
Design for the exception instead of pretending it won't happen. Three options work in practice:
A mask-off moment at the gate. Fine for entry once a shift, awkward if repeated all day. Works well for shift start and end.
A fallback credential for specific roles. Welders, riders in full-face helmets, and similarly-covered roles can carry a card or PIN as backup, used only when the face check fails — not as the default for everyone.
Accept a manual entry for that minority. If only two or three roles out of two hundred employees are affected, a small, tracked manual-entry list is often less disruptive than redesigning the whole gate process around them.
What doesn't work is silence — a system that just logs "no match" with nobody watching for it. That's how proxy attendance and payroll disputes creep back in through the one gap nobody planned for.
Where this has a real limit
If a large share of your workforce wears face coverings for most of the shift — a welding-heavy unit, for instance — face recognition attendance is the wrong primary tool for that group, whoever builds it.
