Per-camera AI ages badly

When the model lives inside the camera, improving it means buying the camera again. A three-year-old smart camera runs a three-year-old model and will keep doing so until it is replaced.

Software covers the whole estate at once

Detection running behind the recorder applies to every stream it can reach, so a mixed estate of old and new cameras gets the same capability on the same day.

The camera's job is the view

What an existing camera needs to contribute is an adequate, well-placed view of the area you care about. That is a placement question, and placement can usually be corrected far more cheaply than hardware can be replaced.

Some things genuinely do need the right camera

Face recognition and plate reading have real pixel requirements, and a camera mounted high for wide coverage will not deliver them. Honest scoping says which cameras qualify for what before you buy, rather than after.

What the system actually does with a frame

Detection, classification, then your rule — in that order, which is the reason false alarms stay low enough that people leave notifications switched on.

Classify before alerting

A moving object is identified as a person, vehicle or animal before any rule is applied. Pixel-change motion detection cannot do this, which is why it fires at rain, moths and headlights.

Rules bound by place and time

A zone you drew, during hours you chose, for an object class you named. 'Any person in the dispatch yard between 9pm and 6am' is a rule; 'motion' is not.

Behaviour over time

Loitering, boundary crossing and repeated presence are patterns across frames rather than single events, which is where analytics separates from a tripwire.

Watching itself

The system reports its own blind spots — a camera gone dark, covered, defocused or knocked out of position — because an unnoticed dead camera is the most common reason surveillance fails to catch anything.

What an AI surveillance system cannot do

Worth stating plainly, because the category is full of claims that do not survive contact with a real site. It cannot predict an incident before there is anything to see — anyone selling prediction is selling a detection rule with better marketing. It cannot recognise a face from a camera that does not have enough pixels on the face, no matter how good the model is. It does not reach 100% accuracy in any real deployment, and a vendor quoting a single accuracy number without asking about your cameras has not measured anything. What it does reliably is detect defined events quickly enough for a person to act, and keep doing so at two in the morning.

Edge, cloud, and what happens when the link drops

Detection runs on an edge device at your site, which is what keeps alerting alive when the internet does not. Remote viewing and history sync use the cloud connection and resume when it returns. For Indian sites this split matters more than it does in vendor diagrams — a surveillance system that stops detecting every time the broadband drops is a surveillance system that is off more often than anyone admits.

What is an AI surveillance system?

A surveillance setup where software analyses the camera feeds automatically and raises an event when something specific happens, rather than only recording for later review. Do I need to buy AI cameras to get AI surveillance?

No. That is the most common and most expensive misconception in this category. A camera with AI on board is one clever camera; analytics running behind your recorder upgrades every camera it can reach. Existing cameras are usually the starting point, with a handful repositioned where a specific capability needs a better view.

How accurate is AI surveillance, really?

Accuracy depends on your cameras, lighting and mounting heights, which is why a single headline percentage is close to meaningless. The useful question is how the system behaves on your site — how few false alarms it produces at night, and whether it still catches what matters. That is what a feasibility check on your own cameras answers.

Is AI surveillance legal in India?

Yes, with obligations. Recording on your own premises is permitted, and signage is expected. Where it gets stricter is workplace monitoring, biometric data such as face templates, and how long you retain footage and who can access it — all of which fall under the DPDP Act. Consent and retention policy are part of a proper deployment, not an optional extra.

Will it flood my phone with alerts?

Not if it is set up correctly, and this is the failure that kills most deployments. Because objects are classified before rules are applied, and rules are bound to zones and hours, the alert volume stays low enough to remain readable. A system producing alerts nobody opens by month three has failed regardless of how accurate its detection is.
